This dish is traditional South Indian full meal especially from Karnataka. It is a unique blend of lentils, vegetables and rice and the flavour and taste comes from home made Bisi Bele Bath powder. Bisi Bele bath is a dish term in Kannada language. Literal translation in English would be Hot lentils rice or heiße Linsen Reis in Deutsch.
How to eat it?
This is a full meal best enjoyed at at lunch or dinner and is served hot with some vegan yogurt and Sandige (A fried snack from Indian subcontinent)
Ingredients
200 gm Split pigeon peas (washed)
200 gm good quality rice washed (Apart from Basmati rice)
1 lemon sized tamarind piece
1 lemon sized jaggery piece
100 gm French beans cut in 1/2 inch lengths
2 medium sized potato peeled and cut in small cubes
1 small carrot peeled and cut in pieces
1 big onion cut in slices
4 tsp Bisi Bele bath powder
1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
1 tbsp oil
Salt to taste
For Tadka
1 tbsp raw peanuts
1 tbsp cashew nuts
2 tbsp oil (Coconut oil or vegan butter)
1/2 tsp Asafoetida
Recipe
Note: If you have separators for a pressure cooker the dish can be made quickly as it is possible to cook the lentils and vegetables at the same time.
👩🍳Pressure cook the lentils in 1 litre water with 1tbsp oil and turmeric powder for 1 whistle
👩🍳Add rice and pressure cook for another whistle
👩🍳In parallel boil the vegetables (potato, french beans, carrot) with some salt
👩🍳Check if the lentils and rice are cooked well and are in a pouring consistency
👩🍳Add jaggery, tamarind paste and Bisi Bele Bath powder
👩🍳Mix well and boil for 5 minutes
For Seasoning/Tadka
👩🍳Heat 2 tbsp oil, add peanuts when oil is hot
👩🍳Once the peanuts turn pink, add some cashews and asafoetida
👩🍳 Add the seasoning to the pressure cooker, add some vegan ghee/butter optional and serve hot
