Horse gram lentils

We know these lentils by several names Kulith, Moth beans, Hurli, Madaras Gram, Gahat ( In Nepali ) Mostly this is prepared in villages and not so popular in my view in the cities in India. This is one of the food varieties which is high in protein content similar to soya. I have started to enjoy it for its delicious taste and also because of the nutrients in it.

Cutting and preparation for this dish is minimal which I love the most about it. The lentils are soaked overnight, pressure cooked and sautéed with onion and some spices. The water from the pressure cooked lentils can be turned into an excellent soup was well. So enjoy this homecookedrecipe and let me know your feedback.

How to eat it?

This is enjoyed as a #sidedish with #rice or #roti

Ingredients

1 cup washed horse gram lentils soaked overnight in 3 cups of water

1 big onion chopped in small pieces

2 slit green chillis

1 Garlic clove peeled and cut in small pieces

2-3 Curry leaves (fresh or dry optional)

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

1/2 lemon juice

2 tbsp groundnut oil (use any other vegetable oil of your choice)

salt to taste

Recipe

👩‍🍳Pressure cook the soaked lentils with a pinch of salt and 2 cups water for 7-8 whistles ( These take long time to cook so pressure cooking for 7-8 whistles is very important else it will be difficult for digestion)

👩‍🍳Separate the water and lentils (Do not throw the water but drink it as a soup)

👩‍🍳Mash the lentils and see if they are a bit mashy. This means that they are cooked well

👩‍🍳Heat the oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and garlic

👩‍🍳Once they begin to splutter add onions and green chilli

👩‍🍳Stir a little and add the curry leaves

👩‍🍳Add the separated horse gram lentils, add salt and mix well

👩‍🍳Stir well and let it cook for 5-10 minutes

👩‍🍳Turn off the heat. Sprinkle some lemon juice and optionally grated coconut and serve.
