Simple Lunch Thali/ Daal Roti

Split green gram lentils + Roti (Indian flat bread), fresh cut cucumbers, jaggery, Chaach (Salted yogurt water ) and Spring onion chutney,.

How to eat it?

This is enjoyed as a simple lunch or dinner Thali. If you have visitors trying Indian food for the first time, this is a great introductory meal.


Ingredients for Moong Dal (Split Green gram Lentils)

1 cup lentils (washed in cold water)

1 big onion chopped as desired

2 green chillis (slit in the middle)

2 tomatoes finely chopped or 1 lemon juice

1 grated carrot

1/2 tsp Turmeric powder

Salt to taste


For Tadka

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

2 tbsp groundnut oil

1 red chilli

1/2 tsp Asafoetida


Recipe for Moong Dal (Split Green gram Lentils)

👩‍🍳Pressure cook for 2 whistles all the above ingredients (except Tadka)

👩‍🍳In parallel heat a pan for Tadka

👩‍🍳When oil heats, add the Asafoetida and mustard seeds

👩‍🍳Once mustard seeds begin to splutter add red chilli

👩‍🍳Stir for few seconds and add them to the cooked lentils


Total time to prepare Lentils

15-20 min
